Overview

When migrating FaxMaker and using GFI Directory, you must also move the user list to the new server as well.  This article gives instructions for moving the user list to the new server when migrating.  This should be done before migrating FaxMaker. 

Prerequisites

Both the old instance and the new of GFI Directory must be running the latest version which is available with the latest version of GFI FaxMaker.  

Solution

Follow the steps below to migrate the GFI Directory user list to a new server.

1. Upgrade the current server to the latest version.
   For more information, please refer to upgrading FaxMaker.  
   
2. Create a backup of the GFI DIrectory data
   
   • Open an elevated command prompt window and run the following commands in the sequence shown hitting enter after each command.

     dsdbutil
     
     activate instance GFIDirectoryDataStore
     
     ifm
     
     create full GFIDirectoryDataStoreBackup

   • Note the backup location as the data files are stored here.  
     
3. Copy the data files
   • Copy the backup files created in step 2
   • Open the backup file location in Windows Explorer.  By default it is c:\windows\system32\GFIDirectoryDataStoreBackup\
   • Copy the file adamntds.dit.  
     
     
4. Install GFI Directory
   
   • Ensure the new server meets or exceeds the GFI FaxMaker system requirements. 
   • Retrieve the GFI Directory installer from the current GFI FaxMaker installation.  Go to <GFI FaxMaker installation folder>\GFIDS\ and copy gfidirectory.exe to the new server.
   • Run the installer on the new server to install GFI DIrectory
     
5. Move the data file
   • After installing GFI Directory, copy the user data to the new server:
     • Stop the following GFI Directory services fro the Services Applet:
       GFI Directory Services
       GFIDirectoryDataStore
     • Open the folder: <GFI Directory installation folder>\GFIinstance\data\
     • Delete all files inside that folder
     • Move the file adamntds.dit copied in step 2 to this folder
     • Start the services that were previously stopped
       

Confirmation

• Ensure that existing GFI FaxMaker users are present in the new instance of GFI Directory.
  • In an internet browser, go to http://[server name]/GFIDirectory
  • Go to < Manage > Users to view the list of users
  • Ensure that users and user information was migrated successfully.
