Overview
When FaxMaker receives a fax it can email the received fax to an end-user. It can also email a transmission report for a sent fax to the sender. For this reason, FaxMaker provides a way to test the email connectivity from FaxMaker to the end user's email system. This article provides some of the common failure error messages and possible solutions when testing from the FaxMaker Configuration Wizard or Email2FaxGateway node in the FaxMaker Configuration.
Environment
You must proceed through the FaxMaker Configuration Wizard, as the mail settings are set in step 4 and the first opportunity to test these settings is in step 11 before the services are started.
Solution
When sending an email test fails the error message is given on-screen. Below are some of the common error messages and possible solutions/areas to troubleshoot for each message.

The transport failed to connect to the server. |
Connection with the mail server couldn’t be established. Confirm the following settings:
|
The server rejected one or more recipient addresses. The server response was: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for <email address>.' |
Connection with the mail server was established but the mail server refused the domain of the recipient's address. This normally occurs because relaying is not allowed from the GFI FaxMaker server. Configure the SMTP server to accept relaying from the GFI FaxMaker machine's IP or allow relaying for the internal email domain only. |
The server rejected the sender address. The server response was: 530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated. | If the GFI FaxMaker server has more than one network interface card (NIC), you may need to configure the NIC properties to force traffic to the mail server to use the correct interface. |
The server rejected the sender's address. The server response was: 530 5.7.3 Client was not authenticated. |
Your mail server requires authentication and you have not entered the authentication details. Go back to the SMTP server configuration and configure the authentication details. You can also configure the SMTP server to accept anonymous SMTP connections (if it is only available to the intranet). |
The message could not be sent to the SMTP server. The transport error code was 0x80040217. The server response was not available. |
FaxMaker can connect with the mail server but user authentication details are invalid. Check the credentials. |
161, 452 4.3.1 Insufficient System Resources | The '452 4.3.1 Insufficient system resources' error is originating from the Microsoft Exchange server due to the server either running out of disk space or free memory. To address this:

Although the above-mentioned items are not actual solutions, they can assist when troubleshooting the failed emails by providing a direction to begin. This article is meant to provide a starting place, as an email is sent into the local SMTP system. This system is not part of FaxMaker and should be troubleshot by a mail or network admin.
