Overview
This article describes the process of installing and configuring a Brooktrout card with a network interface adapter. This will be any card with 1N at the end of the model number (i.e., TR1034+P4V4FH-T1-1N). The 1N specifies an ethernet port on the card.
Please note that there is a dedicated article explaining the general process to install and configure a Brooktrout card without a network interface adapter.
Prerequisites
Access to the fax server and knowledge of network infrastructure and telephony environment is required for this process.
Process
Installation
- If a Physical Fax Board is being used, switch off the computer where you want to install the Dialogic Brooktrout TR1034 Fax card. Then plug in the card following the instructions supplied with the hardware.
Installation guides and product documentation can be found on the Dialogic website. - Restart the computer. Ignore Add New Hardware wizard dialog by pressing Cancel.
- Install GFI FaxMaker and Brooktrout drivers.
- Select the appropriate Brooktrout device series that you are installing.
- It will then prompt you to run the Brooktrout driver setup.
Click Yes to begin the Brooktrout driver configuration wizard.
Note: If you are installing the Dialogic Brooktrout TR1034 device after GFI FaxMaker has been installed, note that the Dialogic Brooktrout drivers can be found in the GFI FaxMaker directory (GFI\FaxMaker\brooktrout
). The GFI FaxMaker Services should be stopped before running the brooktrout_tr1034.exe installation (brooktrout_tr1034_x64.exe for the 64-bit version). - Click Next.
- Modify the installation path if needed and click Next.
- The following command shell window will appear showing the plug and play drivers are installing.
- Once the drivers are installed, uncheck all the boxes except the Run Brooktrout configuration tool box to proceed with the configuration.
Note: Additional fine-tuning of the Brooktrout Configuration can be done later using the Brooktrout configuration Tool, found in Start Menu > Programs > GFI FaxMaker Brooktrout TR1034 Device Drivers.
- Select the appropriate Brooktrout device series that you are installing.
Configuration
- Run the Brooktrout configuration tool. Skip this step if it is already running after the installation.
From All Programs, under GFI FaxMaker Brooktrout TR1034 Drivers (x64), right-click on the Brooktrout Configuration Tool and select run as administrator. - Click Advanced Mode at the bottom left.
- Select your card under Call Control Parameters, and select IP in the Call Control Type field under the Global Settings tab.
Also, note down the card type displayed under the Call Control Parameters.
- Once selected you may get a popup asking you to Configure IP Stack. Select the appropriate protocol you will be using to connect to your telephony environment.
Note: This will put the adapter on the local network. It is not the SIP or H.323 information which will be configured in the following steps. - Select the Ethernet/IP Port tab and configure information about the local network and assign the information highlighted in the screenshot below.
- IP address: The static IP address for this Ethernet adapter for use on the local network.
- IP Netmask: The subnet mask for the local network of the IP address assigned.
- IP Gateway: The default gateway for the network of the IP address assigned.
-
IP Broadcast: Usually the highest network address of the network of the IP address assigned.
- Now the network interface of this Dialogic device will be active on the local network when the Brooktrout Boston Host Service is started.
- Select the SIP node > IP Parameters tab to proceed to input the telephony information required for communication with the SIP environment. Complete the basic information, as highlighted in the screenshot below. SIP was used in this example, but if you are using H.323, select the H.323 node and complete other fields accordingly.
- Click Save and Apply from the top toolbar to save the configuration and start the Brooktrout Boston Host Service with the new settings applied.
- Within the GFI FaxMaker Configuration Wizard, click Configure lines to begin adding the lines.
- Select the line number, Device type (or a total number of Brooktrout channels on the device), and the Channel number to be used for the specified line.
Usually, you should follow the default setup for the line configuration, only changing the Device type total channel count.
Verify the settings for each line and click OK to proceed.
- In the Device tab of the line properties, verify that the correct Card type is displayed by comparing the listing in the drop-down to the Call Control Parameters of the Brooktrout Configuration Tool noted in Step 2.
Note: Do not leave the default value for the Card type - TR1034 T1. It will cause incorrect behavior of the actual card in use if using an analog or Fax-Over-IP (SR140) device.
- Under the Line Capabilities section, select DTMF or DID/ISDN depending on the type of digit routing you are using in your environment (if you will be using inbound DID or DTMF routing of your faxes). If you do not know, or do not intend to use inbound fax routing, select None. Brooktrout series cards do not require Tone dialing or Wait for dialtone options to be checked.
Note: In cases where T1 or FoIP appliances are used, checking Tone dialing or Wait for dial tone options will actually cause the T1 or FoIP appliances to function incorrectly, causing phantom busy tone detections or improper header formatting errors. Do not check these options manually if using a Brooktrout device. - Specify the Rings until Answer value. This is typically recommended and pre-set to 1 ring.
Click OK, and follow the instructions through the rest of the GFI FaxMaker Configuration Wizard.
Confirmation
Now you should be able to complete the FaxMaker setup and send fax with the Dialogic card.
