Fax Over IP Outbound Fax Failures

Overview

Outbound fax failures when using Fax over IP can be common when first setting up or when migrating to a new server.  Unknown Error 03, Handshaking Error 54 or Call Failed 46 can happen when the CLIP (caller line identity presentation) or commonly known as caller ID is not set up correctly.  This article provides a solution to the most common cause of this issue.  

 

 

Environment

Any virtualized FaxMaker installation using Fax over IP.  

 

 

Solution

Important: These customizations require changes to the Windows registry. Problems may occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. DO NOT modify the Windows registry unless you are confident with the values and subkeys you are editing. For added protection, back up the registry before you make modifications, which will allow you to restore the registry if problems occur.

 

The PBX/call manager is requiring specific information about the sender when the call is setup.  This includes the DID or fax number and the IP address of the server and the port number.  This is presented in the following format: 1234@10.10.10.10:5060 where 1234 is the DID, 10.10.10.10 is the IP address and 5060 is the port used.  

FaxMaker can be configured in a number of ways to accommodate the above requirement and they are covered in the information in the Customizing the CLIP and TSID Values of Outbound Faxes article. 

The registry settings under the heading Setting the CLIP value to the local fax line ID will provide a specific CLIP value that is assigned by you.  This value is assigned in the FaxMaker Configuration.  

  1. From Programs, Open the FaxMaker Configuration, select Lines and Devices from the left pane and select Properties. 

  2. Select the first line and select the Line options tab. 

  3. Complete the Local fax ID field with the phone number/DID portion of the requirement required by your PBX/call manager device.

  4. Select OK and complete these steps for each additional line.  

  5. When finished with each line, select OK in the Lines and devices properties box, and when prompted, select Yes to restart the FaxMaker fax server service. 

 

Confirmation

Upon completion of the steps above, the FaxMaker server will be able to provide the PBX/call manager with the correct CLIP values required to set up a session to send a fax.
